how do electronic cigarettes affect the environment?
aside from recycling issues with the plastic used for cartridges and the lithium used for batteries, how else might long-term use of electronic cigarettes impact the environment? I’m not looking for a comparison with tobacco cigarettes. instead, I’d like to hear about how human exhalation of the “vapor” may affect the concentration of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere over time, assuming we’re all smoking cartridges that contain propylene glycol and nicotine, and whatever else may be inside.

    thank you!

Is the electronic cigarette a good alternative?
it seems like a good substitute for cigarettes…. they are cheaper, does not cause cancer, no second hand smoke, etc. Also, it can be smoked anywhere.

Also, anyone know of a downside to this electric cigarette (in comparison to regular cigarettes)?

In the interests of full disclosure, I will state up front that I am not only an electronic cigarette user, but I own a web site that sells them. That said, I have done a considerable amount of research on the ingredients in an electronic cigarette as well as the politically generated controversy surrounding them.

Electronic cigarettes will affect the environment about as much as your breathing does. Propylene glycol is an emulsificant, a humectant, a binding agent and a solvent, amongst other things. It is already an ingredient in a multitude of items we use every day. It is found in food, medicine, cosmetics, toothpaste, mouthwash, perfumes, beer, wine, saline solution … the list goes on and on.

The FDA, in its initial judgment against the approval of electronic cigarettes, cited only one thing that propylene glycol was found in, however. They chose to alarm the public and state that it is a chemical found in antifreeze! Keep in mind that the FDA receives a substantial portion of their funding from both the paharmaceutical industry and the tobacco industry – neither of which wants the electronic cigarette cutting into their market share. There is way more to this story than meets the eye but this is not the forum to discuss that.

More to the point, there are plenty of electronic (also called electric) cigarette e-liquids that do not contain ANY propylene glycol. Instead, they use vegetable glycerin as their binding agent. Vegetable glycerine is a created biproduct extracted through hydrolysis of completely natural substances – usually palm or coconut oils.

In summary, I think the “fumes” from an electronic cigarette are about as innocuous as something can get. I’m all for saving the environment but can we start with saving people’s lives first? That’s why the elctronic cigarette was invented!

I smoke my ecig exclusively and love it. One suggestion is to use the eliquid. I put 2-3 drops into the cartridge each time I wish to smoke. This produces the largest amount of vapor and the best smoking experience. This is also why I would suggest staying away from the all in one atomizer/cartridges. Pre-filled cartridges will get you between 4-10 cigarettes depending on the type of smoker that you are. (not 20 as some advertise)

Downsides? You have to get used to the idea of no ashes, lighters, and smell and that is a little crazy for the first week. But after you stop reaching for lighters you don’t need, you realize how much cleaner the entire habit has just become and that fades. The other downside is that if you have been brand loyal, you will find that the first month going completely e-cig you are missing something. You can’t put your finger on it. After a great discussion with an ex-researcher for smoking, I realized that what I was missing was the additive that Parliament added to their cigarettes to keep me coming back for more. Now, I have no desire for any type of cigarette, except for my ecig.

there is this place in kalamazoo Michigan called 4th Coast Cafe that’s selling e-cigs now (cause of the michigan smoking ban). anyway i had no idea what brand it was when i bought it and kind of just jumped into it instead of researching it. it came with:
1 Battery, 1 Atomiser, 5 Cartilages, 1 USB charger, and a fake leather bag. the e-cig has no name brand on it, but the bag says “karma” on it. i looked that up and i guess it’s a knock off of the Joye 510. looks about the same as one, just a smaller gold band between atomiser and battery. anyway if anyone has heard of this type of e-cigg please let me know. i want to know how it stacks up against other e-ciggs. (i got what’s listed above for $50 and bought 5 extra cartilages for $10). this is my first e-cigg so i have nothing to compare it too.
    Thanks.

    any info on electronic ciggarettes?
do they contain freon or other potentially dangerous chemicals? Are tobacco cigarettes better in comparison. Do electronic cigarettes really help you to quit?

  8. Quilting with Malke says:

For quality you might want to stick with American-Made smoke juice. http://www.Cloud9Smoking.com has the domestic stuff.

Should E-cigarettes be allowed on Flights?
Just trying to make people aware that ecigs are harmless as they don’t need a flame to use them.. as its electronic.. so no fire risk. Also they don’t give out smoke just harmless vapour ie like a normal water vapour from a kettle etc.. the best comparison is to a fog machine at shows or parties as it does have a slight short lasting “nice” ordour..depending on the flavour of cartridge! (there are 100′s lol)
I AM A NON SMOKER BTW.. but this subject really intrigues me!!
The other aspect of these devices not being allowed is that other passengers not aware of the ecig might think it is real and decide tto light up a real cig!! SOLUTION make everybody aware before the flight..on posters maybe.. in the safety speech.. captains annoucment.. on the tv’s.. etc etc.. yes its a bit of hassle for the airline but if it keeps customers happy then why not??

SO basically these wonderful harmless devices SHOULD be allowed on ALL flights or have i missed something.

PLEASE educate yourselves about ecigs more before leaving silly answers (pretty please) but im sure i will be of assistance if you do leave a message..

Sorry its so long and thanks for reading.. hope to get lots of feedback!!

Oh I wish it were that simple. Companies would become knowledgeable on a subject and make an informed decision. Unfortunately, I am sure it will not go that way.

Yes, e-cigarettes contain no second hand smoke, will cause no dangers to others, have no odor and would make a percentage of their passengers more comfortable on their flights. Unfortunately, the prejudice against smokers goes way beyond common sense. And I’m afraid smoking in public and the appearance of smoking in public will be connected very closely.

I will give credit where credit is due. RyanAir is not only letting people smoke e Cigarettes on their planes, they are even selling disposable e cigarettes on their flights. If I were in Europe I would definitely give them my business.

I love e cigarettes and I have quit smoking after 20 years. I hope they become more popular and more accepted. I will do my part to educate those who ask me about mine.
